Today's Guest is John Carillo CFM, IFMA Fellow
John Carrillo, CFM, IFMA Fellow, is a highly experienced professional in the field of facility management and corporate real estate, particularly within technology-related companies. Recently retired as the Director of Planning, Design, and Construction, West Region for AT&T, he successfully oversaw project management for 40 million square feet across 13 states in the western U.S. and Guam. With a team of facility/project managers, architectural and engineering firms, contractors, and consultants, he efficiently managed capital and expense infrastructure projects amounting to $250 million annually.
Prior to his tenure at AT&T, Carrillo held positions in the Corporate Real Estate – Aircraft Division at Northrop Grumman. Throughout his career, he has displayed remarkable leadership, managing up to 1,500 FM employees and overseeing various strategic initiatives, including the construction of a missile factory, decommissioning of a nuclear reactor, and management of seismic retrofit projects in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Carrillo is a respected figure in the global FM community, frequently presenting at international events and offering coursework on FM/real estate and ISO 9001 quality processes. He is currently engaged in virtual presentations focusing on digitization technology, post-pandemic FM trends, and sustainability and resilience in the built environment. Notably, Carrillo has served as the Past Chair of the IFMA Global Board and presently acts as the Liaison for ISO/TC-267.
In February 2021, Carrillo was elected by the Global FM Board of Directors as the Chair of Global FM, a prestigious position he holds for a two-year term. Global FM, established in 2006, is a worldwide federation of member-centric organizations dedicated to advancing the field of facilities management. Under his leadership, Global FM has witnessed substantial growth, increasing its membership from 8 to 14 associations across different countries.
Carrillo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from California State Polytechnical University, as well as an Advanced Management Certificate from Claremont University Graduate School earned in 1986. He obtained his ISO 9001 Registrar Team Certification in 1996 and was honored with the IFMA Fellowship award in 2006. His significant contributions to the FM industry have garnered recognition from IFMA, the Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE), and the Western Construction Consumer Council (WCCC).
