Valued at approximately £171.9 billion in August 2024, the FM sector has grown by £14.2 billion year-on-year, driven largely by the expansion of public sector services and an increased focus on technical expertise in FM. The Hard Numbers
Only 10% of companies are generating actual profit from gen AI in 2024. This isn’t surprising – as someone deeply involved in the AI implementation in built environment sector, I’ve observed countless organisations chasing shiny AI pilots without clear business outcomes. McKinsey suggests successful implementations should deliver at least 20% profit improvement over three years – a benchmark that’s making many boardrooms uncomfortable.
Two Clear Categories Have Emerged:
- The Basic Tools Everyone will use AI for meeting notes, document summaries, and basic automation. But let’s be honest – these won’t differentiate your business. They’re just table stakes.
- The Game-Changers These are the custom-built applications that solve specific industry problems. In the built environment, we’re seeing promising applications in predictive maintenance, energy optimisation, and space utilisation. These can transform operations, but they require significant investment and expertise to implement successfully.
Why Most Are Getting It Wrong
The pattern is clear: organisations launch dozens of small AI experiments, celebrate minor wins, but fail to scale anything meaningful. It’s what McKinsey calls “death by a thousand pilots” – a phrase that perfectly captures what I’m seeing across our industry.
